Batwoman williams iii7/7/2023 ![]() “Batwoman” #26 is a good issue, but it’s a good issue within its run as a finale, it barely registers as anything more than a lost chance - and I don’t mean that as an insult to the creative team, who didn’t even realize their story wouldn’t reach the point they were trying to bring it to. ![]() Of course, for those of you who are fans of the Williams/Blackman run on the series - like I’d imagine most of you are - there’s an obvious level of anti-climax here as their story was never allowed to actually get where it was going. In terms of how it all played out, you’d imagine that part of this was just DC employing schoolyard tactics (the bully beating you up harder because you told an adult about your problems) instead of letting their creators do what they are comfortable and/or happy with. Or, to an extent anyway, as the team planned to leave at issue #26 and were booted off two issues earlier to be replaced at #25 by Marc Andreyko and Jeremy Haun. Haden Blackman’s run on the title, as previously announced. Today, “Batwoman” #24 hits stands everywhere and marks the final issue of JH Williams III and W. ![]() The pan trilogy jenny hickman7/6/2023 ![]() ![]() Maybe it’s the intrigue of lost boys or the idea of flying into an adventure but I think the real reason I couldn’t put this book down was because Jenny Hickman’s writing is magical. Maybe it’s my love of Disney or my desire to escape to Neverland. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. I received this book for free from Publisher in exchange for an honest review. But accepting a place among The PAN means Vivienne must abandon her life and foster family to safeguard their secrets and hide in Neverland’s shadows… forever. Vivienne can either escape to Neverland’s Kensington Academy and learn to fly (Did he really just say fly?) or risk sticking around to become a human lab rat. His far-fetched diagnosis comes with a warning: she is about to become an involuntary test subject for Humanitarian Organization for Order and Knowledge-or HOOK. The doctors may be puzzled, but Deacon, her mysterious new friend, claims she has an active Nevergene. Just when liberation finally seems possible-days before her eighteenth birthday-Vivienne is hospitalized with symptoms no one can explain. ![]() Since her parents were killed, Vivienne has always felt ungrounded, shuffled through the foster care system. Russo’s blend of absurdist plot twists and characters who did not necessarily act funny, but were hilarious in their oddities, was a pleasant surprise. More often than not they are one-joke tomes that get repetitive quickly. While a bit on the light side, I did like it a lot. Russo’s Straight Man was a bit different from our usual book club fare, offering us a comical look at small-town university life and politics in place of the more somber books we’ve read recently. I’m not a book reviewer, but I can play that role. ![]() Posted by Chris on, 7:11:34, in reply to “Richard Russo’s Straight Man” In the meantime, I would like us to get the Straight Man discussions underway, you know, before we all forget about it.ĭo we have a volunteer in the house to kick start the discussions? ![]() 20th century ghosts7/5/2023 ![]() He must meet the man himself but his adventure is not what he expected. The editor goes on a search to find the mysterious author who wrote this story. This kicked 20th Century Ghosts off to great start. The story within a story is merely a summary of this new horror masterpiece and just that summary is some of the best horror I’ve read in a while. That is, until he reads a story called Buttonboy. He’s been at it for so long that he’s seen everything and is becoming agonizingly bored. Here’s a breakdown: Best New HorrorĮddie is an editor for a horror magazine. Overall, the book’s good outweighs the bad. The middle stretch falls a little flat in my opinion and includes a couple of more dull or less original entries. Some of these stories are some of the best I’ve read all year. The collection focuses on horrors placed during the 20th century, not quite modern but not quite old either. His latest full collection of shorts, 20th Century Ghosts, is another winner from the new horror master. However, like his father Stephen King, he has emerged as a powerhouse that is constantly releasing new books and stories and shows no signs of slowing down. ![]() I have been trying very hard to keep up with Joe Hill’s releases in order to keep my rankings of Hill’s books up to date. 20th Century Ghosts is a collection of short stories by author Joe Hill. ![]() |
